Senate seeks ITMRA update

Sens. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) and Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) this month wrote to the heads of the 24 major federal agencies inquiring about the implementation of the Information Technology Management Reform Act.

Thompson, chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, and Lieberman, the committee's ranking Democrat, asked the agencies to provide status reports on the 4-year-old law. Agencies must report on their use of chief information officers, the benefits of capital planning and investment control, the use of performance measures, and the impact on business processes and IT acquisition.

'Each year we get reports from agencies, the media and the General Accounting Office detailing how many federal information technology programs are mismanaged,' Thompson said.

Lieberman said the committee needs to follow up to ensure that the law's reforms are being implemented.
