CA plans to buy Sterling Software Inc.

Computer Associates International Inc.'s planned $4 billion acquisition of Sterling Software Inc. of Dallas would join two large-scale federal suppliers that work in different software categories.

CA, which has an $80 million federal business unit in Reston, Va., makes software products for enterprise computing and storage management. Sterling's federal systems group in McLean, Va., supplies software and services for intelligence, mapping, weather systems, secure communications and air traffic control.

CA president Sanjay Kumar said Sterling Software has a $250 million backlog of services committed to federal agencies.
