Microsoft plans to upgrade its Win9x kernel

A successor to Microsoft Windows 98, known as Windows Me, will arrive later this year.

The Me stands for Millennium Edition, Microsoft Corp. officials said.

The upgrade will include incremental enhancements in areas such as digital media compatibility, online performance, home networking and integrated system monitoring, officials said.

Microsoft had planned to cease production of the Win9x line and focus on its new Windows 2000 operating system, which is built on the crash-resistant NT kernel.

But chief executive officer Steve Ballmer decided last year that the company would continue developing the 9x kernel for new client versions.
