Net conference server runs under Linux

The latest MeetingPoint conference server from White Pine Software Inc. of Nashua, N.H., is the first H.323-ready IP videoconferencing product for the Linux operating system.

The MeetingPoint 4.0.2 software server, designed for hosting real-time Internet videoconferences, can handle up to 50 H.323 users or up to 200 CU-SeeMe Pro or CU-SeeMe Web users.

White Pine ported the meeting server to Red Hat Linux 6.1 from Red Hat Inc. of Durham, N.C., and will do the same for other software products such as White Pine Cafe. MeetingPoint also runs under SunSoft Solaris and Microsoft Windows NT.

The international H.323 standard permits multimedia conferences using video, voice and data over IP networks. CU-SeeMe supplies video for chat users and is providing visual communications on some Web sites.

MeetingPoint 4.0.2 starts at $8,995 per server.
