Coast Guard seeks data guru

NORFOLK, Va.'The Coast Guard learned recently how tough it is to fill those top systems posts.

After the service thought it had landed an ace prospect for the Guard's deputy chief information officer and chief knowledge officer post, the candidate received a better job offer from his own agency and turned down the Guard, said Daniel F. Sheehan, Coast Guard information and technology director. Now it's back to the drawing board on a job the service created in December 1998 but has so far been unable to fill.

Sheehan, who spoke last week at the Navy Connecting Technologies Conference, described the position as a philosopher king of knowledge management.

'It's almost a religious quest for more and better data,' he said.
