Tool creates 3-D Web images

A free Virtual Reality Modeling Language tool called GeoVRML 1.0, downloadable from, can express geographic data in three dimensions for Web viewing.

SRI International of Menlo Park, Calif., received partial funding for the tool's development from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The open-source download has associated tutorials, practice files, terrain utilities and editors.

According to the company, GeoVRML 1.0 tightens the accuracy of floating-point VRML geodata to less than 10 meters.

To manipulate 3-D Web scenes built with GeoVRML, users of Microsoft Windows 9x, NT or Unix systems must download a 50K Java runtime environment and a VRML plug-in for their browsers.
