Enterprise suite enables remote users to collaborate

With Doors'which looks like Windows'opportunities open up for many users to work on projects

The Doors Enterprise Requirements Suite from Quality Systems and Software Inc. of Mount Arlington, N.J., lets remote workers collaborate via a shared document editor, Web interface and database.

Doors lets users drill down into a project through an interface that resembles Microsoft Explorer.

Central to the suite is Doors, the project-requirements software, which stores project information in a proprietary database format. Doors organizes folders and projects in a hierarchy with an interface resembling that of Microsoft Windows Explorer, product manager Paul Raymond said. It imposes five levels of access controls: read, create, modify, delete and control.

The Web component of Doors ERS, called Doorsnet, lets remote workers use Doors across the Web. They can edit the text and pictures rather than just look at static pages. Doors controls the access rights to Doorsnet.

The suite's third component, a document editor called DoorsrequireIT, is based on Microsoft Word and lets remote workers edit project documents offline on home or notebook computers.

The suite runs under any combination of 32-bit Microsoft Windows, SunSoft Solaris, Hewlett-Packard HP-UX and Compaq Tru64 Unix operating systems. Requirements include 64M of RAM and 50M of free storage, plus a Microsoft Word license if DoorsrequireIT is used.

A 10-seat installation starts at $14,000 with two floating licenses for Doors, five floating licenses for Doorsnet and three for DoorsrequireIT.

Additional components are $5,000 for a single floating license of Doors, $5,000 for a five-seat license of Doorsnet and $300 for a DoorsrequireIT seat.

The company gives agencies a discount even though it doesn't publish a government price, Raymond said.
