The SANStar storage engine, new from ECCS Inc., shares files between network-attached storage devices and storage area networks.

SANStar consists of a thin operating system with a high-availability software module, said Priyan Guneratne, vice president of engineering and operations for the Tinton Falls, N.J., company. Users can install the software on their own Pentium III servers or buy an ECCS server with LAN and Fibre Channel connections to accommodate NAS and SAN equipment.

Client systems can have any combination of Microsoft Windows, Unix or Linux operating systems. The product can manage 100G to 1,000T of data storage, Guneratne said.

SANStar comes with its own graphical interface, but the company is developing interfaces for widely used enterprise management apps.
