Toshiba's Portege notebook now comes with a SpeedStep processor

The 3.4-pound, $2,499 Portege 3440CT midrange notebook PC from Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. now has a 500-MHz mobile Pentium III SpeedStep processor.

Measuring about three-quarters of an inch thick, the 3440CT comes with a 6G hard drive, 64M of RAM, 8M of video RAM, an 11.3-inch polysilicon display, and Microsoft Windows 9x, NT or 2000. An optional battery slice keeps the unit running up to nine hours, according to the maker.

Toshiba spokesman Craig Marking said the Portege includes a LAN port replicator with an Ethernet enable and disable switch. An optional full dock for using the notebook as a desktop replacement has 10/100-Mbps Ethernet, CardBus, parallel, serial and Universal Serial Bus ports as well as a multipurpose bay for CD-ROM, CD-rewritable, DVD-ROM, Iomega Zip, Imation LS-120 and other drive types.

The notebook's keys are 90 percent of full size, Marking said.

Toshiba has also released a series of
6-pound Satellite 2210 notebooks with 500-MHz Celeron processors, starting at $1,399.
