PC encryption software secures while at file level

VPDisk Pro, based on the Santa Clara, Calif., company's virtual private disk technology, is the first of a line of products to be released this year. The future Website Security Suite and Business Security Suite will be server products designed for Web sites and enterprise systems.

VPDisk installs within the operating system and acts as a gateway between the kernel and the file system, OmniSecure president Roland Chu said. All file input and output calls pass through it, and it manages all file transactions. An open application programming interface allows for development of modules for use with the management gateway.

It's automatic

The $79 VPDisk Pro package can apply the RC4 encryption algorithm from RSA Security Inc. of Bedford, Mass., the Data Encryption Standard, Triple DES or the Blowfish algorithm. Through the API, users can add other algorithms. All files are automatically encrypted as they are stored on the PC. They can be backed up but cannot be decrypted or read without specific permission.

The Website Security Suite prevents defacement of a site by restricting write access to directories via an encryption configuration file. The Business Security Suite, to be released by year's end, resides on an internal enterprise server.

VPDisk Pro runs under Linux and SunSoft Solaris.
