Veritas NetBackup now comes in two sizes for different data environments.

The version of NetBackup 3.4 called NetBackup DataCenter is for large enterprises with terabytes of data to manage. The version called NetBackup BusinesServer is for departments and remote offices, said Glen Simon, a product marketing manager for Veritas Software Corp. of Mountain View, Calif.

The two versions are virtually identical except in scalability. BusinesServer 3.4 can back up one server and eight clients, senior product marketing manager Cindy Guiles said.

Works with Win

Both versions have been tested for compatibility with Microsoft Windows 2000, and the company plans to have the software certified for Win 2000, Simon said.

When performing backups, the Veritas software preserves all Win 2000 attributes such as the Active Directory, Simon said. It can restore an entire Microsoft Exchange database, as well as individual objects within the database, which simplifies restoring only a few e-mail messages for a user.

Veritas also has improved the wizards for setting up devices and backup policies, Simon said.

New to the DataCenter version is FlashBackup for Hewlett-Packard HP-UX.

Simon said FlashBackup, a snapshot or point-in-time backup of a large system, was previously available only for the SunSoft Solaris version of Unix.

The DataCenter version has a block-level incremental agent for backing up Oracle Corp. databases on HP-UX and Solaris platforms.

The BusinesServer version of NetBackup has an optional agent, called NetBackup NDMP, that issues commands to network-attached storage devices using the Network Data Management Protocol.

NetBackup DataCenter 3.4 starts at $5,000 for Microsoft Windows NT and $10,000 for Unix.

NetBackup BusinesServer 3.4 starts at $1,995 for NT and Win 2000 and $3,995 for Unix.
