Four share Boston MAA

The General Services Administration last month awarded four contracts for local-telecommunications services in Boston under the Metropolitan Area Acquisition program.

AT&T Corp., Bell Atlantic Corp., Southwestern Bell Corp. of St. Louis and WinStar Communications Inc. of New York will compete for an estimated $270 million worth of federal telecom business through the eight-year contracts.

The Boston metropolitan area is the 16th for which MAA contracts have been awarded under the Federal Technology Service program. The awards mark the 11th win for WinStar, the eighth for AT&T, the sixth for Bell Atlantic and the third for Southwestern Bell. GSA next plans to award contracts for Albuquerque, N.M.; Boise, Idaho; New Orleans and Philadelphia.

The contracts supply switched data and voice and dedicated transmission services. GSA predicted they would save agencies as much as $78 million over eight years, or 64 percent, compared with current government rates.
