AUG. 8'The Navy Department will open an office within two months to help department officials identify their electronic-business capabilities and encourage organizations to work together to make their business processes more efficient, officials said.

Rear Adm. Keith W. Lippert, the commander of the Naval Supply Systems Command, appointed Rear Adm. Linda J. Bird to head the e-Business Operations Office. Bird will continue as NAVSUP's vice commander, and the office will be located at the command's headquarters in Mechanicsburg, Pa., according to a NAVSUP announcement late last week. She will hire a senior executive service deputy director to work with her.

After opening in early October, the department's e-Business Operations Office will help NAVSUP centralize operational control over "several existing electronic transaction and credit card systems," according to the NAVSUP announcement. The command manages the Navy Department's International Merchant Purchase Authorization Card program. There are 35,000 department credit card holders.
