SLR tape libraries go modular

Tandberg Data Inc. of Simi Valley, Calif., has put scalable linear recording tape drives into a new series of automated tape libraries.

The Tandberg SLR100 library comes in three models that can accommodate 10 to 40 cartridges and up to four SLR100 tape drives, for a total data capacity of 4T. Each Tandberg proprietary-format cartridge can hold up to 100G at 2:1 data compression.

The library transfers data at up to 36 gigabytes/hour and works under Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, Unix, Linux or any combination of the operating systems.

The SLR100 libraries sell for $6,900 to $26,500 through government resellers.

This SAN's media-friendly

SANergy software from Tivoli Systems Inc. does file and data sharing among heterogeneous server and storage components in a storage area network.

'Regardless of what the hardware is or what you subscribe to as far as media, you'll be able to utilize it in a SAN environment,' said James M. Russell, director of federal operations for the Austin, Texas, company.

SANergy sets up a single common file system that can be accessed from computers running Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, Apple Mac OS, SunSoft Solaris, IBM AIX, SGI Irix or Compaq Tru64 Unix. The SANergy software must be installed on each computer attached to the SAN. The computers and RAID units can be connected via SAN protocols such as Fibre Channel, SCSI or Serial Storage Architecture.

Tivoli SANergy file sharing requires a separate license for each server or workstation, company spokeswoman Joyce Humble said. The licenses start around $3,000 for NT and Windows 2000 systems and around $4,000 for Unix systems.
