Web kit is free'for some

The Summer2000 software developer's kit from the Web3D Consortium of San Ramon, Calif., is free on CD-ROM to consortium members.

The CD contains open-source and community-source X3D software tools, a conformance suite and 3-D content developed by members of the consortium, formerly called the Virtual Reality Modeling Language Consortium.

Among the consortium members is the Army Simulation, Training and Instrumentation Command in Orlando, Fla.

Virtual Viewpoint was developed by Zaxel Systems Inc. of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. STRICOM's Web site is at www.stricom.army.mil.

Various 3-D tools, viewers and source code are downloadable from sdk.web3d.org/source/index.html. The consortium's Web site is at www.web3d.org.
