Police can search databases with pager

SmartPartner Pager service from Paradigm4 Inc. of Fairfield, N.J., gives police officers secure wireless access to databases with a handheld device that's under 4 ounces.

SmartPartner is tiny enough to be used by officers on foot, horseback or bicycle. It uses the RIM [email protected] Pager 950 from Research in Motion Ltd. of Ottawa, with a 32-bit Intel 386 microprocessor. It connects to a nationwide network run by BellSouth Corp.'s Wireless Data Limited Partnership.

The pagers sell for $395 each, and the service is $69.95 per month per account. Pagers can be leased in a service package for $89.95 per month.
