AF outsources base's support

The Air Force has named two contractors to take over base operations support at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, beginning in April.

The Air Education and Training Command last month selected Computer Sciences Corp. and Phoenix Management Inc. of Austin, Texas, as the outsourcing vendors under the five-year, $352 million program.

Phoenix Management will provide airfield operations services, and CSC will take over civil engineering, communications and information technology services, and infrastructure, transportation, supply and mission support work, said Maj. Byron James, a 37th Training Wing spokesman at Lackland.

Before the contracts are finalized, base organizations have 30 days to review the agreements and then 30 more days during which to file any protests, he said.

The Air Force expects that the vendors will take over the work now handled by 1,400 government employees. CSC said in a statement that it plans to employ many Lackland employees to minimize service disruption.
