Epson workgroup ink-jet has picoliter technology that produces fine detail

An ink-jet workgroup printer from Epson America Inc. has a claimed 2,880-dot-per-inch resolution and 13-page-per-minute maximum print rate.

The $449 Epson Stylus 980N features a built-in dual Ethernet and FireWire adapter to serve workgroups, product manager Steve Semos said. A standalone version of the printer, upgradeable for network use, is $249.

Semos said the 980N can stand up to professional demands with a duty rating of 5,000 pages per month. It accepts transparencies, photo stock and envelopes as well as plain paper.

New in the 980N is Epson's 3-picoliter Ultra Micro Dot print technology that produces fine detail, Semos said. A picoliter is one-trillionth of a liter.

'A 3-picoliter drop [of ink] cannot be seen by the naked eye,' he said.

The printer delivers monochrome pages at highest quality at 13 ppm and pages with text and color graphics at 10.5 ppm. Semos said the new printer could produce a photo-quality, 8- by 10-inch picture in one minute, 18 seconds.

Epson manufactures the units in Portland, Ore.
