80 finish move to FTS 2001

Eighty agencies have finished migrating their telecommunications services to the General Services Administration's FTS 2001 contracts.

Although the largest agencies have yet to complete the transition, more than 29,000 federal locations are now using FTS 2001 voice and data services, GSA estimated.

GSA's Federal Technology Service in late 1998 and early 1999 awarded eight-year FTS 2001 contracts for long-haul telecom services to Sprint Corp. and WorldCom Inc. They replaced the FTS 2000 contracts with Sprint and AT&T Corp., whose extensions expire Dec. 6.

To date, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, with more than 1,000 sites, is the largest organization to cut over its service. Others include the Federal Reserve System and the Supreme Court.
