PTO sets streamlining goals

PTO sets streamlining goals

The Patent and Trademark Office is streamlining the patent application process with its new Patent Business Goals Final Rule, officials announced last week.

For example, inventors can file applications that include lengthy computer programs or biotechnology sequence data via CD-ROM or other electronic formats.

The rule changes have three goals:

• Reducing the time required to review applications and eliminate unnecessary conditions of applying for and obtaining a patent

• Removing impediments to electronic filing, processing and publishing of applications

• Reducing the cost to the public and PTO.
