The General Accounting Office has awarded a contract potentially worth $750,000 to Gelco Information Network Inc. to host a desktop travel management application for 15,000 users.

Gelco of Eden Prairie, Minn., has already begun implementation and plans to have the system ready for use by December. It guarantees secure transactions via a virtual private network. The contract is for one year with four optional years.

Gelco vice president of marketing Dan Rahgeb said the system requires only basic training and automatically highlights and audits for possible errors.

GAO chose Gelco because the company filled its needs, said Ralph Iozzo, director of financial management.

In other travel system news, the Defense Department and prime contractor TRW Inc. completed laboratory testing of the Defense Travel System this month at Fort Huachuca, Ariz. The next step is live testing by users at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo.

TRW program manager Rich Fabbre said DTS deployment is scheduled for Dec. 18.

The $264 million system will generate travel authorizations; make reservations through Sabre Inc. of Southlake, Texas; route them to American Express Government Services of New York for ticketing; route vouchers for approval; and interface with the Defense Finance and Accounting Service to reimburse federal travelers electronically.

Gelco is a subcontractor on the department's DTS project.

Meanwhile, the Transportation Department has extended until Oct. 31 its deadline for proposals for a Web site to manage travel arrangements and expenses for any agency [GCN, Aug. 7, Page 1], said Susan Tollerson, a project manager for Transportation.
