PTO's Shaw to Smithsonian

Dennis R. Shaw, who stepped down last month as chief information officer at the Patent and Trademark Office, has begun work in the newly created position of chief technology officer at the Smithsonian Institution.

Asked about the highlights of his seven-year tenure at the patent office, Shaw cited electronic filing of patent and trademark applications over the Internet, a revenue accounting system and a data management program.

A Vietnam veteran, Shaw has been a General Accounting Office auditor, head of the Marine Corps' information resources management, and chief of staff and director of operations for the Defense Information Systems Agency's Center for Information Management.

At the Smithsonian, Shaw will be the senior executive responsible for all information technology within the institution, which comprises 16 museums and the National Zoo.
