Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere database app gains C2 certification

The government has granted C2 security certification to Sybase Inc.'s small-footprint database application for workgroups and remote offices.

Adaptive Server Anywhere 7.0.0 with the C2 patch is certified to run under Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6a and NT's C2 upgrade, said Chris Kleisath, engineering director for Sybase's anywhere solutions division.

The C2 designation is a measure of a system's ability to control users' access privileges by log-in monitoring and action auditing. The certification applies only to use of the database on a standalone machine, not in a networked environment, Kleisath said.

The National Security Agency and National Institute of Standards and Technology run the Trust Technology Assessment Program and accept tests from approved third parties. The program covers operating systems, network components and applications.

CygnaCom Solutions Inc. of McLean, Va., tested Adaptive Server Anywhere at Sybase's expense, Kleisath said. The certification took about 18 months, he said.

Adaptive Server Anywhere is designed for workgroups and users who are not database experts, Kleisath said.

'One of the things we've heard from a lot of our government customers is that they would like to use Adaptive Server Anywhere in environments where the level of security was a little bit higher,' Kleisath said.

Sybase is making the C2 upgrade patch available as a free download from www.sybase.com/downloads.

Adaptive Server Anywhere is the second Sybase product to gain C2 certification. Sybase SQL Server 11.0.6 received certification almost four years ago.

Informix Corp. of Menlo Park, Calif., Microsoft Corp. and Oracle Corp. also have C2-certified relational databases.
