Los Alamos lab names its first CIO

Effective use of the lab's resources is one of CIO Richard Kendall's goals.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory has named Richard Kendall as its first chief information officer.

Kendall said it's his job to develop and promote an integrated information management vision for the lab. Managing the lab's information includes overseeing its systems infrastructure and the mechanisms to safeguard data integrity and security, Kendall said.

'The CIO will provide a global view to ensure information resources are used with greatest effectiveness in fulfilling the laboratory's mission and operations,' he said.

Although he is the lab's first official CIO, Kendall said, systems officials have informally managed some CIO functions there for the past few years.

As CIO, Kendall will be a member of the lab director's staff and report to Bill Press, deputy director for science, technology and programs. By working in the director's office, Kendall said, he can ensure responsiveness to senior executives as well as line organizations.

Kendall has been a lab employee since 1995, when he began working in the geoanalysis group. The following year, he became director of Los Alamos' Virtual Laboratory Testbed for Industry, which provides companies access to the lab's computing environment.

Last year, Kendall took over as program manager for technical cybersecurity at Los Alamos, overseeing security enhancements mandated by Congress and lab and Energy Department management.

Kendall has bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin and a doctorate degree in mathematics from Rice University.
