NOV. 3 -The Social Security Administration yesterday began offering online applications for retirement benefits.

Users can complete the form online, print it and mail it to SSA, along with required identifying documents, officials said. The service is available 7 a.m. to midnight Eastern time, Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The electronic applications are stored in an SSA database and retrieved when the signed copy and documents are received, officials said.

PC users can access the application at www.ssa.gov/pro/irib2/wwwrmain.shtml. A version for Macintosh users is in development.

Users who want to access the online application must have a working printer connected to the computer, be at least 61 years and 9 months old, plan to retire within four months of filling out the form and agree to direct deposit.

The information is encrypted during transmission for security, officials said.
