Extreme Networks Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif., has a network monitoring tool that keeps an eye on the application layer performance of an enterprise network.

ServiceWatch, an addition to the company's ExtremeWare suite of management software, can monitor application performance on any vendor's hardware.

ServiceWatch monitors up to 1,000 network services through a Web interface. The administrator can specify service types, locations, user names, passwords, intervals and several other monitoring parameters. Scripts created with an extensible application programming interface can respond automatically when performance falls below defined thresholds.

ServiceWatch 1.0 for SunSoft Solaris platforms starts at $2,995 for a version to monitor five network services and goes up to $19,995 for one that can monitor 100 services. The $4,995 extensibility API is licensed separately.

ServiceWatch for Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows NT and Linux will come out later this year.
