Patent history is a few simple clicks away.

The Patent and Trademark Office expanded its Web site to include every patent ever issued in this country. Nearly 7 million patents are online at www.uspto.gov/patft.

The PTO database contains 2T worth of full-page images of patents issued since 1790. Patents issued before 1976 are searchable by number and classification; those issued since 1976 are searchable by full text.

To host the images, the agency has added two Hewlett-Packard K570 servers running iPlanet Web Server Enterprise Edition 4.0 from iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions, an alliance of Sun Microsystems Inc. and America Online Inc.

PTO hosts the patent text files in Albany, N.Y., on four Sun Enterprise 450 servers running Netscape Web Server Fast Track Edition 4.0.
