Xerox beefs up Document Centre speed and programmable features

The latest addition to Xerox Corp.'s Document Centre line of digital copier-printers can churn out pages at a rate of up to 75 per minute.

The Document Centre 480 has more programming capability, multiple networking options and twice as much memory as the next largest member of the product line, said Art Smith, president of the Xerox Office Systems Group.

The Xerox Document Centre 480 prints and copies up to 75 pages per minute
and can mix single- and double-sided pages in a job.
Throughout the Document Centre 400 series, introduced in June, Xerox has replaced Motorola PowerPC processors with 366-MHz Intel chips, Smith said.

The Document Centre 480 has a faster network controller than its 400-series predecessors, a 433-MHz CPU, 64M of RAM and a 9.1G hard drive. It prints 75 pages per minute and, with the scanning option installed, scans 65 ppm.

Printing and copying resolution is 600 by 600 dots per inch.

The 480 has a better 'build job' function, which lets users program the handling of copying and print jobs. They now can choose to sample, delete, change or accept segments of scanned documents. And they can program the production of single- and double-sided copies within the same job, Smith said.

Containers for toner and fuser are larger on this model, but they are still compatible with earlier Document Centre models.

The accounting feature for tracking copy and print jobs now accommodates 64 characters per field instead of 16, Smith said.

Scan directly

The 480 can scan documents directly into Adobe Portable Document Format, whereas previous models captured scans as TIFF files that had to be converted if users wanted PDF output.

The Document Centre 480 comes in four configurations. The entry-level model, a digital copier only, is $44,000. The 480 ST, which also includes networked printing, is $49,000. The 480 SL with basic scanning features is $52,900, and the 480 SLX with deluxe scanning options is $56,900.
