5 million items on Library of Congress site

The Library of Congress' Web site, at www.loc.gov, has reached its goal of 5 million items online under the National Digital Library Program.

The seven-year project, which got $15 million in federal funding and more than $45 million in private donations, now has 90 different collections. They range from folk music audio files to historic maps, theater posters and manuscripts. The site registers about 18 million visits each month.

More than 75 percent of the library's 120 million items are in nonbook format, such as cuneiform tablets or compact disks. Each type of collection has required the library to pioneer new techniques for bringing the media and their associated metadata to the Web.
