Navy center taps two for $500m contract

For a systems upgrade that could be worth nearly $500 million, the Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center in San Diego has chosen two companies to overhaul shipboard computers and communications as part of a five-year program.

The Navy's technology development lab at Point Loma, Calif., selected Resource Consultants of Vienna, Va., and Amsec LLC of Virginia Beach, Va., to replace and ruggedize existing equipment, SPAWAR public affairs officer Tom LaPuzza said. The contract is the largest to be awarded by the center, he said.

'We've awarded a blanket contract,' LaPuzza said. 'We could call these people and say we need six of these and 6,000 of these. This provides us with the capability to get new wireless technology.'
