FEB. 5'Filing income tax returns can be confusing enough, but how do military personnel determine what part of their yearly income is taxable if they were stationed in Bosnia or aboard a ship in the Mediterranean?

The IRS has the answer, as well as answers to dozens of other military-related tax questions, at www.irs.gov/forms_pubs/pubs/p3toc.htm. The Armed Forces Tax Guide covers pay exclusions for combat zones and hazardous-duty areas. It describes how to qualify for exemptions and how to report income earned by resident alien spouses.

The publication also advises service members how to apply for a filing extension.
