FileMaker rolls out app for Palm devices

FileMaker Inc. is betting that users of its desktop database management software will want to run it on their handheld computers.

The Santa Clara, Calif., company recently announced FileMaker Mobile, a Palm OS add-on to its FileMaker Pro 5 database manager for Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh computers.

The mobile product resides on both a desktop computer and a handheld device running Palm OS 3.1 or higher and having 2M of storage.

A FileMaker Mobile wizard on the PC lets users select the fields and records they need on their handhelds, product manager Deborah Coulton said. When they next synchronize with their PCs, FileMaker Mobile loads the chosen data.

So far, FileMaker Mobile is available only for individual use, Coulton said. FileMaker Mobile lists for $49. The required desktop FileMaker Pro 5 Version 3 lists for $249.
