MARCH 21—The Navy has awarded the first phase of a contract for a new Defense Department-wide human resources management and payroll system to PeopleSoft Inc., the Pleasanton, Calif., company announced today at the FOSE 2001 trade show in Washington.

When fully deployed, the Defense Integrated Military Human Resource System will handle pay and personnel data for 3.1 million active-duty and reserve members of the armed services, said Steve Trost, PeopleSoft's client executive for federal professional services.

The Naval Sea Systems Command, as the contracting agency, awarded the contract yesterday, Trost said. The contract is for just less than $7 million.

The Web-accessible system will use the PeopleSoft 8 platform, which the company launched last year to replace its client-server architecture.
