IRS will take extension requests online

MARCH 23'Taxpayers looking for extra time to file their returns now can request an extension online or by telephone.

Form 4868, which grants a four-month extension, is available from the IRS Web site at www.irs.gov. Taxpayers can file an extension request using tax preparation software or through a tax preparer.

The IRS also will open on April 1 a toll-free phone line at 888-796-1074 for extension requests. Taxpayers are required to make requests by the filing deadline, which this year is on April 16.
