IRS now takes e-mail requests for extensions

The IRS will let taxpayers use the Internet, telephone or paper forms to extend their 2000 income tax filing deadline by four months.

Through a preparer or using tax preparation software, taxpayers can electronically file an extension request. The IRS has a toll-free phone line at 888-796-1074 for extension requests. To download a paper version of Form 4868, go to www.irs.gov.

Taxpayers must make their re-quests by the 2000 filing deadline, April 16.
