USDA tackles foot-and-mouth disease online

The Agriculture Department last month made fast-spreading foot-and-mouth disease the focus of its home page, at www.usda.gov.

USDA agents, stationed alongside Customs Service personnel at international airports, are questioning returning travelers about their itineraries. The department also opened a toll-free hotline about the disease at 800-601-9327.

USDA last month banned import of certain animals and meat products from Europe to prevent the spread of the communicable virus in the United States, which has had no cases since 1929.
