Adapa portal centralizes knowledge for Army program office

MAY 22—The Army's Program Executive Office for Standard Army Management Information Systems has developed a knowledge management portal that will eventually serve 1,700 staff members.

Program office officials designed the portal, which went live in mid-February, to move organizational data off desktop computer hard drives and to a central location, said Pete Johnson, chief information officer for PEO STAMIS at Fort Belvoir, Va.

The portal is built around the Oracle9i Application Server Portal framework, Johnson said. Oracle Corp. consultants worked with program office staff for the better part of a year to develop the Web application, which also uses an Oracle8i database.

Workflow, document management and other collaborative tools are built into the portal, Johnson said.

Johnson christened the knowledge management system Adapa, after the Babylonian god of knowledge.

'I thought the portal needed to have a name other than 'knowledge portal,' ' he said. Instead of inventing a military-style acronym, he did some research into mythology and found a name associated with knowledge and wisdom.

Eventually, remote users at other Army sites will be able to access the password-protected portal through their Web browsers, Johnson said. Only about half of the PEO STAMIS staff works in the Washington area.

Adapa is part of the overall Army Knowledge Online effort to create a servicewide information portal, Johnson said.

Through AKO, some information about the services that the program office provides to other divisions of the Army will be accessible to general Army users. Access to Adapa through AKO is slated to begin in a few weeks, Johnson said.

Johnson said Oracle's software lets organizations bring the portal online with only core functions at first, then add more services and users later on. 'It's a nice way to build a system,' he said.
