MAY 23'Rear Adm. John A. Gauss, commander of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, will retire from the Navy on July 1. He last week turned over the SPAWAR leadership to Rear Adm. Kenneth D. Slaght, who had served as his vice commander.
After a month-long vacation, Gauss said, he will take another federal job. He said that it would not be with the Defense Department but did not announce further details.
Gauss was instrumental in developing the Navy's Information Technology for the 21st Century initiative, the Defense Information Infrastructure's Common Operating Environment and early efforts for the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet.
He became SPAWAR commander on March 20, 1998. He previously worked as director of the Allied and Fleet Requirements Division for the Space, Information Warfare Command and Control Directorate of the Navy staff. Before that, he was the Defense Information Systems Agency's deputy director for engineering and interoperability.
