MAY 29'The Federal Aviation Administration will begin using an alert warning system to prevent runway accidents at the country's 34 busiest airports.
The Airport Movement Area Safety System will provide air traffic controllers with visual and aural alerts of potential runway accidents.
AMASS is an upgrade to an existing radar detection system. It consists of two subsystems, one built by Norden Systems of Norwalk, Conn., and the other by Dimensions International Inc. of Alexandria, Va.
The runway alert system gathers data from runway sensors, airport surveillance radars and air traffic control data. The system identifies possible conflicts by analyzing the position, velocity and acceleration of aircraft in the air and on the ground, as well as other vehicles on the runway.
