JUNE 11President Bush has named John P. Stenbit, a former TRW Inc. vice president, as the White House's choice to fill the vacant chief information officer post at the Defense Department.
Stenbit, who recently retired as executive vice president for special assignments in TRW's aerospace and information systems division, will undergo background checks before his nomination is sent to the Senate Armed Services Committee for review. The Senate must vote to confirm Stenbit as CIO.
Defense jobs are not new to Stenbit. He previously spent four years at DOD, including two as principal deputy director of telecommunications and command and control systems, and a stint as a staff specialist for the Worldwide Military Command and Control System in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
At TRW, he also formerly was the director of requirements and group development for the company's defense systems group.
'Mr. Stenbit is well qualified for the position. It's an important job, and the president looks forward to Mr. Stenbit being a part of the administration,' White House spokesman Jimmy Orr said.
Stenbit has a bachelor's and a master's degree in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology.
Linton Wells II is now Defense's acting CIO. Arthur Money left the position in April. Wells is the principal deputy assistant secretary of Defense for command, control, communications and intelligence.
