Army posts grades for online students

The first 4,000 soldier students have completed their initial semester of college courses through the Army's University Access Online education portal, at www.earmyu.com, and can now download their grades.

Last month prime contractor PricewaterhouseCoopers Inc. of New York launched the portal's back-end registration and student records management software from PeopleSoft Inc. of Pleasanton, Calif.

Making history

PricewaterhouseCoopers partner Brian Dickson said he expects to have 15,000 soldiers registered by year's end. About 42 percent so far have signed up for a bachelor's degree, 33 percent for an associate's degree and 7 percent for a master's degree. History courses are the most popular, Dickson said, followed by computer science.

Nick McCabe, the EArmyU project manager for PeopleSoft Consulting, said temporary registration tables collected by the portal are being converted into the PeopleSoft Student Administration System, which can support records for up to 300,000 registrants. A PricewaterhouseCoopers spokeswoman declined to state the value of the PeopleSoft subcontract.

The Army education portal at present is open only to active-duty soldiers at Fort Benning, Ga.; Fort Campbell, Ky.; and Fort Hood, Texas. They can take online courses from 20 higher-education institutions to earn college degrees and certificates, using an Army-provided notebook PC and software bundle [GCN, Oct. 2, 2000, Page 1].

In other Army news, the service last month negotiated a blanket purchasing agreement potentially worth $300 million with Micron Government Computer Systems Inc. of Nampa, Idaho, for desktop and mobile computers and peripherals.
