Paige disputes $450m loss at Education

The Education Department has not lost $450 million in funds, Secretary Rod Paige said last month.

The department's inspector general had identified more than $450 million as being reportedly misused by the department since 1998 [GCN, May 5, Page 13].

Education has recovered $250 million in duplicate payments to grantees, Paige said in a May letter to Congress.

Nonetheless, the secretary said he would continue with department plans to improve Education's financial and student loan systems.
