Vendor anticipates 10 Gigabit Ethernet standards

Prior to the release of a 10-Gbps Ethernet specification, Foundry Networks Inc. has introduced 10 Gigabit Ethernet products for its BigIron Layer 3 switch.

The 10-Gbps modules, available this month from the San Jose, Calif., company, will have a range of optical interfaces for various wiring plants. Foundry Networks has said it will comply with the standard that a working group of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is writing.

The draft IEEE 802.3ae standard for 10 Gigabit Ethernet does not yet have a timetable for approval, but an IEEE spokesman said it is a hot technology that probably will move through quickly. It will be the fourth acceleration for the Ethernet networking standard.

Foundry Networks' experience with 100-Mbps Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet products has made the company confident about releasing 10 Gigabit Ethernet products in advance of the standard, said Marshall Eisenberg, Foundry's director of product marketing.

'With each successive generation, it has gotten easier,' Eisenberg said.

The company's current BigIron switches will accept the B10Gx single-port module to extend 10-Gbps Ethernet to WANs and campus networks. An 850-nanometer, wide-wave-division-multiplexing optical interface will make links up to 65 meters long over multimode fiber, primarily for connections between wiring closet switches.

A 1,310-nanometer WWDM optical interface will support links up to 300 meters long over multimode fiber for enterprise networks or switch connections inside a data center, and links up to 10 kilometers over single-mode fiber between buildings.

A 1,310-nanometer serial optical interface will serve single-mode fiber links up to 10 kilometers long. And a 1,550-nanometer serial optical interface will permit single-mode fiber links up to 40 kilometers.

The B10Gx module will sell for $44,995, the 850-nanomeneter optical interface for $4,495, and the 1,310-nanometer WWDM optical insert for $9,995. The 1,310-nanometer serial optical insert will be priced at $14,995 and the 1,550-nanometer serial insert at $39,995.
