The General Services Administration has awarded contracts for local telecommunications in San Antonio to Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. and Winstar Communications Inc. of New York.
San Antonio is the 21st area to gain Metropolitan Area Acquisition service from GSA's Federal Technology Service. The MAA contracts, which begin the third phase of the program, have an estimated potential value of $239 million over eight years. They offer basic voice, and switched data and dedicated services at prices up to 60 percent less than current government prices.
Southwestern Bell also holds MAA contracts in three other cities and Winstar in 12 others. Winstar won its MAA contract despite the fact that it filed in April for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code.
