NOAA tags SER Solutions for data conversion

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is looking to a Herndon, Va., company to help it create the world's largest digital archive of climate data at the National Climatic Data Center.

Under a $1 million contract, SER Solutions Inc. will digitize data from the Air Force Defense Meteorological Satellite Program and NOAA meteorological summary collections, a company spokeswoman said. NCDC produces numerous climate publications and responds to data requests from researchers all over the world.

The company will undertake the data conversion and classification of the massive amounts of weather information needed for the Climate Database Modernization Program, she said.

Among NCDC's climate data are more than 175 million documents, 660 million feet of microfilm and more than a petabyte of digital data. NOAA manages global databases for meteorology, oceanography, solid earth geophysics and other sciences.
