Compaq announces per-seat PC deals

Compaq Computer Corp. is selling new Evo desktop and notebook PCs through per-seat deals, starting at $99 a month, that include help desk assistance, technology updates and asset reporting services.

Prices in the per-seat program, called Access on Demand and announced today, range from $99 to $169 a month for three years, Compaq Global Services' spokesman Joe Hogan said. Custom software images are available for Compaq's and other vendors' hardware environments.

Many government offices, Hogan said, prefer to pay for computers and services 'in a utilitylike fashion so they understand exactly what they're spending.' He said the per-seat deals are 'very simple, like a cell phone purchase, with extras as needed.' Buyers own the hardware at the end of the three years.

The program includes the new 1.5-GHz Evo Desktop D500 Pentium 4 PC, a small-form-factor D500, a 1.1-GHz Mobile Pentium III Evo N600c notebook PC with 14-inch display, and a 1-inch-thick, 850-MHz N400c with 12.1-inch display.

The desktop Evos have 128M of synchronous dynamic RAM, 20G hard drives, CD-ROM drives, and a choice of Microsoft Windows 2000, NT 4.0, Windows 98 or the forthcoming Windows XP.

Compaq vice president Jeri Callaway said new LCD monitors are on the way from Compaq as well as updates to the iPaq and BlackBerry handheld computers. She said all the Evo systems comply with Section 508 of the 1998 Rehabilitation Act Amendments and can be ordered with third-party screen readers, browsers, magnifiers, speech recognition systems, on-screen keyboards or other assistive devices preinstalled.
