San Bernardino sheriff faces up to ID software

California's San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department this week awarded a contract valued at $1.3 million to Imageware Systems Inc. of San Diego. Imageware will supply the department with the company's Crime Capture System and Face ID software, which uses search algorithms developed by Visionics Corp. of Jersey City, N.J.

Crime Capture is a digital booking system that stores and organizes digital images and text, Imageware officials said. Face ID, which is based on Visionics' FaceIt search technology, lets users import digital photos and compare them against a photo image database.

The saying 'The eyes are the windows of the soul,' takes on new meaning with regards to Face ID software. Face ID uses the eyes as the central reference point for each face.

The system also works with the county's existing fingerprint and jail management systems, Imageware officials said.
