GovConnect keeps N.J. officials on the same page

The MyNewJersey portal lets state and local government officials share documents, communicate ideas and keep up with statewide news. Now employees from the Information Technology Office and Local Government Services Division have created a subportal, called GovConnect, to keep the state government in touch with 566 municipalities.

County clerks and chief financial officers will get first access to the GovConnect service, followed by other parts of the government, said Gary Mayer, MyNewJersey portal manager.

'This project allows state agencies to move from paper-based to electronic delivery of services to local government,' said state CIO Wendy Rayner, announcing GovConnect. 'Government officials can find out what similar employees in other municipalities are doing. Through sharing ideas, government in all localities will benefit.'

GovConnect will have three sections:

  • A news repository with local finance notices and new laws

  • A document library with a place to post questions or comments to a general audience

  • Another document library and message board for officials in the same types of jobs across the state.

IT workers used Portal Server 3.0 and Application Server 6.0 from iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions of Palo Alto, Calif., running on Sun Microsystems Inc. Unix servers. All portal information resides in Oracle Corp. databases.

GovConnect is one of four planned subsections of the state portal. Mayer said government-to-employee, government-to-citizen and government-to-business sections will be added or expanded in the future.

The project, which has been in the works since 1997, received $1.8 million in funding over the past two years. Some of that went to hardware infrastructure upgrades, Mayer said.
