Federal and industry execs take the spotlight

Joseph R. Cipriano of the Navy and Jackie Fletcher of the Mint were named government executives of the year at the Post Newsweek Government Awards gala in Washington Wednesday night. The ceremony, attended by about 1,000, was the 14th annual awards event sponsored by GCN.

Cipriano, program executive officer and enterprise acquisition manager for Navy IT, accepted the award for fielding the $6.9 billion Navy-Marine Corps Intranet and for enterprise software development.

'Some people are born great. Some people achieve greatness. Some people are fortunate enough to be surrounded by great people,' he said. 'This recognition means a lot. It helps to reinforce the rightness in what we're doing.'

Fletcher, the civilian agency executive of the year, is associate director and CIO of the Mint. She revamped the agency's IT environment with an enterprise resource planning system and a successful e-commerce site.

In her brief remarks, Fletcher said she has worked to improve efficiency, but she stressed the need to make more strides in another area.

'I want to bring more women into the IT field,' Fletcher said, pumping her hand in the air to audience cheers.

Herbert W. Anderson, president of Northrop Grumman IT, received the 2001 industry executive award for his contributions to cost-effective government IT solutions.

Anderson became president and chief executive officer in July 1998 when Northrop Grumman Corp. combined its data systems and services units and its Logicon subsidiary into a single organization.
