Telework gets boost at DOD

Defense Department has signed off on a policy that will allow up to 25 percent of eligible employees to work from home or an approved alternative work site as part of the federal Interagency Telework/Telecommuting plan.

The policy will allow selected Defense civilian employees to telework at least one day every two weeks. In announcing the policy, David S. Chu, undersecretary of Defense for personnel and readiness, encouraged managers to support telework proposals from their employees.

Defense will offer two types of telework arrangements: regular and recurring, and ad hoc. Regular and recurring could include full-time telecommuting; at the least it would mean telecommuting one day per biweekly period. The ad hoc arrangement covers teleworking on an irregular or one-time basis.

The policy was approved as an incentive for recruitment and retention, Chu said, and to improve the quality of life for Defense employees.
